The following are the English tenses commonly taught at the high school level, complete with brief explanations and examples:

1. Simple Present Tense

Function: Expresses habits, facts, or general conditions.

Formula:

(+) Subject + Verb 1 (s/es)
(–) Subject + do/does + not + Verb 1
(?) Do/Does + Subject + Verb 1?

Example:

She goes to school every day.
I don't like coffee.
Do you play football?

2. Present Continuous Tense

Function: Expresses actions that are currently taking place.

Formula:

(+) Subject + am/is/are + Verb-ing
(–) Subject + am/is/are + not + Verb-ing
(?) Am/Is/Are + Subject + Verb-ing?

Example:

They are studying now.
I don't watch TV.
Are you doing your homework?

3. Present Perfect Tense

Function: States events that have occurred and are still relevant now.

Formula:

(+) Subject + has/have + Verb 3
(–) Subject + has/have + not + Verb 3
(?) Has/Have + Subject + Verb 3?


Example:

I have finished my homework.
She has not visited the museum.
Have you ever been to Bali?

4. Simple Past Tense

Function: Expresses events in the past.

Formula:

(+) Subject + Verb 2
(–) Subject + did not + Verb 1
(?) Did + Subject + Verb 1?


Example:

He went to the market yesterday.
They didn't come last night.
Did you see the movie?

5. Past Continuous Tense

Function: Expresses an action that was happening in the past.

Formula:

(+) Subject + was/were + Verb-ing
(–) Subject + was/were + not + Verb-ing
(?) Was/Were + Subject + Verb-ing?

Example:

I was reading a book at 9 PM.
They weren't sleeping.
Was she crying?

6. Past Perfect Tense

Function: Expresses an action that was completed before another action in the past.

Formula:

(+) Subject + had + Verb 3
(–) Subject + had not + Verb 3
(?) Had + Subject + Verb 3?

Example:

She had left before I arrived.
I hadn't eaten lunch.
Had they finished their work?

7. Simple Future Tense

Function: Expresses future plans or predictions.

8. Future Continuous Tense
