Basic tenses for junior high school

The following are the basic tenses commonly taught at the junior high school level, complete with brief explanations and example sentences:

1. Simple Present Tense​


Function: Expresses facts, habits, or routines.
Formula:

(+) Subject + V1 (s/es for he/she/it)
(–) Subject + do/does + not + V1
(?) Do/Does + Subject + V1?

Example:

(+) She goes to school every day.
(–) She does not go to school on Sunday.
(?) Does she go to school

2. Present Continuous Tense​


Function: Expresses events that are currently taking place.
Formula:

(+) Subject + is/am/are + V-ing
(–) Subject + is/am/are + not + V-ing
(?) Is/Am/Are + Subject + V-ing?

Example:

(+) I am studying now.
(–) I am not studying now.
(?) Are you studying?

3. Simple Past Tense​


Function: Expresses events in the past.
Formula:

(+) Subject + V2
(–) Subject + did not + V1
(?) Did + Subject + V1?

Example:

(+) They watched a movie yesterday.
(–) They didn't watch a movie.
(?) Did they watch a movie?

4. Past Continuous Tense​


Function: Expresses events that took place in the past.
Formula:

(+) Subject + was/were + V-ing
(–) Subject + was/were + not + V-ing
(?) Was/Were + Subject + V-ing?

Example:

(+) He was reading a book last night.
(–) He wasn't reading a book.
(?) Was he reading a book.

5. Simple Future Tense​


Function: States events in the future.
Formula:

(+) Subject + will + V1
(–) Subject + will not (won't) + V1
(?) Will + Subject + V1?

Example:

(+) I will visit my grandma tomorrow.
(–) I won't visit her.
(?) Will you visit your grandma?
